The city of Houston has a long and storied history. Founded in 1836 by two brothers, Augustus Chapman Allen, and John Kirby Allen, the city was named after General Sam Houston, who had recently led the Texas army to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto. The city quickly grew into an important port and commercial center, becoming one of the largest cities in the United States by 1900.
Houston has seen its share of ups and downs over the years. In 1901, a major oil discovery near Beaumont sparked an economic boom that lasted until World War II. Since then it has seen a resurgence in population growth and economic development due to its proximity to Mexico and other Latin American countries. Today, Houston is home to some of the most diverse cultures in America and is considered one of the most vibrant cities in the country.
